The Stompdrift Dam is in the Olifants River and is the largest dam in the Klein Karoo, with a 25km shoreline that cuts into the foothills of the Great Swartberg Mountain Range. Nestled between the Swartberg and Kamanassie Mountain Ranges, Stompdrift Dam is surrounded by pristine hills and unspoilt vegetation, home to more than 2500 plant species and 50 bird species. The Stompdrift dam is situated 8km from De Rust. It offers a relaxing breakaway in beautiful surroundings for outdoor lovers and excellent carp fishing opportunities. Take a cruise to explore the dam’s surroundings, where a wide variety of birds including African eagles and spoonbills can be seen. It is a perfect family venue for swimming and enjoying water sports. The Stompdrift Dam is perfect for fishing, boating, skiing, paddle skiing, kayaking, canoeing, swimming, water skiing and angling. Please remember to bring your own equipment (whether it’s your boat, kayak, or fishing rod) to fully enjoy all that this dam has to offer!

 

At Stompies Oord, we proudly welcome you to the ultimate Klein Karoo camping experience. Our campsite consists of three lawn-covered terraces – a total of 24 campsites are available – 20 are electrified with shared points. The front terrace has afternoon shade (sites 13 – 22) and the middle terrace has morning shade (sites 4 – 10). The campsite is positioned on the high water mark of the dam. Each campsite has its own fire pit. Neat and clean Built Ablutions with hot showers, and toilets and Safari Ablutions with cold showers and toilets are available.

 

For the birder, there are around 50 species in this area! Come for a day visit, braai and enjoy the outdoors, or perhaps stay over and experience all the vast Klein Karoo has to offer! This valley is a tourist paradise, with horse riding, hiking, 4×4 trails, caving and so much more on offer in the area!

 

There are excellent carp fishing opportunities with a massive carp population in Stompdrift Dam. We also have bass and a range of other fish species in this arid region. In fact, there’s a rich diversity of aquatic life, with carp and catfish the most common angling species caught here. The dam offers excellent angling opportunities for the avid angler.

 

The top three hiking trails in the De Rust area include the Blomnek Trail, De Rust Run, and the Rust and Vrede Path. Work up a sweat and enjoy the fresh air in the beautiful Klein Karoo.
